CLIENT
NME (New Musical Express) is a British music journalism website and former magazine published since 1952. They are creating a new quarterly magazine as an offshoot that focuses on the depths of music.

PROBLEM
The theme of the first issue is the “Aesthetics of Music”. The client wants the cover design to include a montage style design, and they want the issue’s main article, which is about punk, to be designed with a grid structure that can be used throughout the magazine.

SOLUTION
The cover design focuses on how “music is the complex rhythmic and harmonic organisation of basic elements”. The article about punk uses a collaged type lockup and collaged imagery that visually reflects decay and creates deliberate discomfort. The design is on a 12-column grid, giving editorial flexibility to create unconventional layouts.
